Tucker's Update on Whiskey

You may remember that on May 19, 2007 Tucker help an Arlington family adopt a 12-year old Scottie named Whiskey. Ken and Nancy Handshaw, the Rescue Coordinators for the Scottish Terrier Club of New England, were instrumental in rescuing Whiskey.

Whiskey and Ken Handshaw on Adoption Day at the Scottie Connection Store

I recently spoke with the person Whiskey is caring for. She said that his name has been changes to "Whiskers." He gets along splendidly with all three canine family members; he is very healthy and playful, and has become a hit with Tucker's groomer at the Clip Joint.

Whisker's is a proud member of the Arlington canine community, and a great credit to the Scottish terrier breed. He, of course, is on Tucker's invitation list for the soon coming Yappie Halloween Party at the store.

Scotties to the rescue!

Tucker's Dogfighting Remedy

Tucker continues to be highly annoyed with the issue of dog fighting and the people who finance and are engaged in it.

Thankfully, the United States Senate has introduced legislation "designed to crack down on both dogfighters and the spectators who are drawn to these bloody spectacles." The legislation is co-sponsored by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).

Tucker has a "zero tolerance" for the people engaged in this criminal activity. He is aware that all 50 states ban dogfighting, but welcomes the tougher legislation introduced by Senators Kerry and Boxer.

Dogfighting is a "sadistic contest" in which two dogs fight to the death in order to entertain spectators who represent all that is "horrible" about the human race. Tucker does not think that these spectators are even members of human society. He thinks that they belong to a sub-human underground society of genetically deranged idiots.

These sub-human beings deserve a taste of their own folly delivered by their victims. They should be put in a ring with two dogs hungry for revenge.

Don't you think so? Tucker certainly does! Don't you think Tucker would make a great Supreme Court Justice?

Tucker's Press Conference on Dogfighting

Tucker has become extremely agitated after reading the gory details of the Federal Indictment of Michael Vick and his involvement in a dog fighting venture. Tucker, a very sensitive and loving Scottish terrier, is truly pained by Vick's inhumane torture of dogs under his control.

Tucker: "Ladies and gentlemen of the paw press, I will be happy to take your questions today about the recent federal indictment of Michael Vick.

Paw Press: What should the National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell do in response to this indictment?

Tucker: "Everyone should read the 19 page indictment against Vick and his 3 co-defendants. It details some of the most horrific and inhumane acts committed against dogs by any man, and casts the very darkest shadow on a public figure like Vick. The NFL Commissioner should suspend him immediately without pay."

Paw Press: Is this an isolated incident, or is dog fighting more widespread?

Tucker: "Unfortunately, very few of these dog fighting ventures ever see the light of day, and very few of the individuals involved are ever brought to justice. However, there appears to be a large hidden society of dog venturer's out there! My hope is that Vick is convicted and gets sentenced to jail. This would encourage other law enforcement officials throughout America to go after other criminals engaged in these activities."

Paw Press: What should the Atlanta Falcon's do about this matter?

Tucker: "No public relations firm can fix this problem for the team. Team owner Arthur Blank needs to do more than "do the right thing." He needs to have Vick leave the team until his trial is over."

Paw Press: What about Vick's corporate sponsors?

Tucker: "Many corporations use dogs and cats in their commercials. People love their pets. I cannot imagine any corporation continuing to sponsor Vick in any way. He has shown himself to be the lowest form of man imaginable."

Paw Press: What should the American public do about this matter?

Tucker: "Everyone should be aware of what goes on in their own neighborhood. Mistreatment of animals is an unforgivable and horrific crime. If anyone becomes aware of animal abuse, they should immediately report it to the authorities."

Tucker's Fight to Pick

Tucker cannot understand how members of the human race can be involved in dogfighting operations resulting in animal cruelty, and ultimately the death of many dogs. Such actions are certainly a crime against humanity.

The recent federal indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback and his co-defendants sheds sunlight on an activity that attracts the worst members of the human race.

What kind of person would knowingly sponsor and exhibit an animal in a dog fighting venture? What kind of person would name any venture "Bad Newz Kennells?" What kind of person would execute a pit bull with a .22 caliber pistol that did not perform well in a "test" fight?

What kind of person would electrocute a dog for not performing well in a "test" fight. Tucker is outraged that anyone would organize fights between dogs. No person who would engage in such activities could be considered worthy of receiving a dog's undivided and everlasting love.

Tucker is encouraging everyone to contact National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Michael Vick immediately. The Humane Society of the United States suggests that the NFL Throw the Book at Michael Vick.

Michael Vick, his co-defendants and every other "criminal" like them, should be required to work at an animal shelter for the rest of their lives and care for injured, sick and dying animals subjected to dog fighting ventures.

Tucker would do something else with people like Vick, but he will not allow me to disclose his remedy.

Tucker Begs for Your Help

Recently, Tucker received a note from a dear lady, who currently has two wonderful Scotties - Sassy and Angus. She loves her Scotties to death, but is now faced with a family health crisis that will force her to give up Sassy for adoption.

Tucker is literally begging for your help.

Sassy is a 2 year old who has been showered with love in her current home. She is regularly groomed, has all of her shots, is house broken and crate trained. She and Angus voluntarily trot into their crates at bedtime.

Tucker's primary goal is to help place Sassy into a good, loving, "forever" home. If you are willing to adopt Sassy, Tucker believes that she will reward you with eternal love and gratitude.

If you are not familiar with the breed, Tucker suggests that you learn about the characteristics of The Scottish Terrier.

A Scottie in Need

Life is not always fair, neither for humans nor their dogs. Last month, we were involved in assisting with the placement of a 12 year old Scottie named Whiskey.

Whiskey had lived alone with his companion for almost 12 years, but his life was turned upside down in an instant when his owner became hospitalized with a terminal illness.

Suddenly Whiskey was alone and "at risk." His story thankfully had a most happy ending. He is happily living in his "forever home" with a loving family.

We have recently become aware of another senior Scottie (9 years old) whose owner became too ill to continue caring for him. We believe that "Tommy" had been well cared for by his original owner, and appears to get along well with other dogs. Since he was living alone with his previous owner, he has not been around younger children.

We are hoping to help find "Tommy" a "forever home" soon. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in finding out more about "Tommy," please contact us.

Whiskey's New Home

Last week, Whiskey was in Halifax, MA with an uncertain future, and today he is in Arlington, MA certain that he is surrounded by loving human and canine companions.

Whiskey is a 12 year old Scottie. I met him for the first time today. He is a friendly, perky and especially mellow Scot. Ken and Nancy, the rescue coordinators of the Scottish Terrier Club of New England took Whiskey into their program last Sunday and, in less than a week, were able to place him in a "forever home."

Whiskey now has a beautiful fenced in yard to explore along with 3 playmates - 2 King Charles Cavaliers and a miniature poodle. He will get plenty of walks each day, and will enjoy the company of many other dogs at a local park.

It was clear that Whiskey had a very proper upbringing from his former owner. When he was introduced to his new family, he seemed to instantly fit right in.

The earth is full of caring and loving people, and Whiskey is fortunate to be given a second chance.

Scotch Whiskey

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is an inspirational song written for the 1945 musical, Carousel.

Tucker and I spent a good part of today trying to facilitate the "rescue" of Whiskey, the Scottie in Halifax, MA desperately in need of a "forever home." A regular customer at our store, when she heard about Whiskey's story, offered to immediately take him in her home.

"Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain, though your dreams be tossed and blown."

The Rescue Coordinator of the Scottish Terrier Club of New England has offered to help Whiskey.

"Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart."

Tucker and I decided that, if need be, we would take Whiskey into our home. This is a Hugh concession for Tucker to make, because he has had everything to himself and for himself for the past 9 years.

"And you'll never walk alone. You'll never walk alone."

Although Whiskey remains at this hour still at risk, there are wonderful people trying to make sure that he Never Walks Alone.

Whiskey has an amazing affect on well intentioned, sober, human beings.

Please Help Rescue a Scottie!

If you have ever read Greyfriars Bobby, you know the deep, and very special bond that forms between a terrier and their "master." In this beloved story, Bobby, the Skye terrier, guarded his master's grave for 14 years in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edingburgh, Scotland.

Today, Tucker received a request to help rescue a 12 year old Scottie named Whiskey. His owner has recently been hospitalized and is not expected to return home.

The wee laddie is currently under the temporary care of neighbors in Halifax, MA, but such care is highly temporary. Whiskey is a "perky little fellow, and seems in good shape," according to neighbor, Linda Jacobs, who contacted us.

Tucker is very concerned about Whiskey, and asks anyone who would give Whiskey a "forever home" to contact us at 617.947.2453. A terrier gives as much love as you will find in "God's heaven." Please allow Whiskey into your heart. A Scottie should never be allowed to "Walk Alone."

Has anyone contacted Ken and Nancy Handshaw* about Whiskey? They may know of people who prefer to adopt older Scotties.

The Family Circle

The weather was supposed to be overcast with occasional rain; sure to put a damper on our planned family event.

Tucker was hoping to see some distant cousins at the Scottie Rescue Day event he had helped plan some weeks ago. Ever the optimist, Tucker was eager to get to the store to get ready for the event, and to meet Ken and Nancy, the Scottie Rescue Coordinators. He made sure that we had coffee for the people saved by rescue Scotties.

Tucker introduced himself to Ken and Nancy. He was a perfect gentleman. He did not bark, nor did he challenge their presence in his store. He somehow knew that they were "Scottie people," and that they were wonderful folks. Tucker instantly knew that they were owned by Scotties. In fact, he was quite sure that they had a number of Scotties living with them.

As the day advanced, Tucker was visited by several prominent members of the Scottie clan - Duncan came up from New Haven, Jock from Maine, MacKenzie and William from Newburyport, and Macbeth from New Hampshire. Although they had never met before, they all seemed to instantly "get along."

Tucker and his "family" were all males, of varied backgrounds, travels, and occupations. The common thread between them all was their Scottish heritage. They all seemed to respect each other highly. There were none of the usual petty squabbles found at certain family gatherings.

They all were a sight to see. They pranced around on the sidewalk outside the store. Passersby were heard saying, "What a well behaved group of distinguished gentlemen." Another person asked if any of the "dogs" are up for adoption. Tucker immediately thought that it is humans that are allowed into Scotties lives, not the other way around.

When the end of the event was nearing, the human guests - Paul, Barbara, Joann, Jodi, Sandy, Beth, Ken and Nancy - all began the usual round of "goodbyes." The Scotties, on the other hand, did not engage in such behavior. They were thrilled to have met one another, shared some sniffs, and to have enjoyed the gourmet treats Tucker had available for them.

Thanks to Ken, Nancy and Tucker, the Scottie Rescue Day was a success. It was a day for and about Scotties. Life is good when you are in the company of Scotties!

Scottie Rescue Day

Some time ago, Tucker asked me to sponsor a fundraising event for the Scottish Terrier Club of New England. He told me they have a wonderful rescue program.

On Saturday, April 28, we are having Scottie Rescue Day at the store in Arlington from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

There will be many great prizes, and free refreshments for all fur friends and people who attend.

There will be more information on this event in the very near future.
