Posted: 09/11/2007 Tucker Is Seeking Help
With the holiday shopping season approaching, Tucker thinks now is the time to hire a part-time employee for the store. Of course, Tucker will conduct all interviews and, ultimately make the hiring decision.
The person who is selected will be very important to our business. Tucker wants this person to be both a pet and people lover. He also realizes that to experience continued success, we must offer the highest level of customer service possible.
Tucker's selection criteria for this new position are quite specific. He is seeking an exceptional person with the following characteristics:
1.) Excellent attendance and dependability.
2.) Integrity and honesty.
3.) Motivated and dedicated.
4.) Strong work ethic.
5.) Positive and polite.
6.) Exceptional communication skills.
To find this exceptional person, here are some of the questions that Tucker intends to use during the interview:
1.) Why do you want to work here?
2.) Why do you feel you would be a good at sales?
3.) What would be your initial customer greeting?
4.) How would you handle an irate customer?
5.) How would you handle an unruly pet?
Tucker does not want to disclose all of his possible interview questions in advance, but it would be fair to say that many of the questions will be about canines. After all, the pets are our real customers. They merely bring the humans along for the walk.
Tucker truly believes that his store is a unique, fun place to visit. He is seeking someone capable of enhancing its uniqueness and funness.
If you are interested in this position, please stop by the store to discuss this opportunity with Tucker. You can also call Tucker at tghe store 781.646.0021. He is an equal opportunity employer with a distinct bias toward dog people.
AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Posted: 09/04/2007 Tucker's Labor Day
As you can see, Tucker had a restful and very enjoyable Labor Day weekend. He has worked very hard in 2007, so he deserved the break that the holiday provided.
Earlier today, Tucker helped Pat process and package the Internet orders from yesterday. He also accompanied me to the Post Office where we dropped the packages off for shipment. We then went to open the store.
As is always the case, Tucker is the official greeter at the store. He greets everyone with his trademark AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOO! Immediately following the greeting, Tucker does an instant DNA test to see if the customer passes muster.
Tucker follows the customers throughout their visit, helping them where possible, and always nudging them toward the bakery case where all of the delicious goodies are displayed. He knows that whenever I open the bakery case, he can occasionally grab a cookie from one of the many baskets filled with treats.
This approach does not always work, but failure is not part of Tucker's genetic make-up. So, he defines success one crumb at a time. If he succeeds in snarling a cookie, he thinks he has hit the "jackpot." However, if he only ends-up with a couple of crumbs, he is not unhappy with the results.

I sent Paul off to the store this morning after he took me for a stroll out and about the neighborhood. As usual, I scampered after any and all squirrels and cats we came across. Although unsuccessful today, I will never give up until I have successfully vetted the neighborhood of any and all varmints.
Today I decided to stay at home with Pat to help her with the process of updating our Quickbooks program with sales and inventory information. I am a stickler when it comes to tracking our Internet and store sales.
We continue to experience significant year-to-year sales increases on the Internet and at our retail store. In fact, our store was voted the best pet supply store in Arlington, MA by the readers of the Arlington Advocate Newspaper. Also, our Website is listed on WBZTV.COM/A-List. According to Paul, this means that we are one of the best Bakery's and Boutique's for dogs in the Boston area.
Of course, I have had a lot to do with these distinctions. After all, I have a significant influence on both of these businesses. Anyway, getting back to helping Pat. When she enters all of the sales and inventory information, she prints out a copy of the final report for me to review.
My review usually takes very little time. Usually less than 20 seconds. Pat knows that I have successfully reviewed and approve the report when I return it to her torn and shredded into a million pieces.

Tucker's Customer Appreciation Announcement
The Scots are known for their "penny pinching" ways. Tucker is typically no different. In fact, he carries this form of behavior to excess.
As a result, he insists that he get everything for free. In his nine years, Tucker, our gorgeous Scottish terrier, has not paid for room and board, or for virtually anything else. What a life!
Over the past year, he has earned his keep by becoming the General Operating Dog (GOD) of Scottie Connection. He is at his store most days, and takes a very "paws on" approach to the business.
Just the other day, he said to me..."You know, our store has been open for one year, and it is time to have a special customer appreciation event." This did not surprise me. However, what he said next did. "We should have a store wide sales event and reduce all of our prices."
This most uncommon suggestion truly surprised me. Nevertheless, since Tucker is truly in charge, he has decided to announce our 1st Anniversary Sales Event during July 17 - 21.
So, if you are in the Arlington, MA area during that week, you can visit Tucker at the Scottie Connection Store.
Tucker will make it worth your while. You will receive a 10% discount on all items purchased at the store. No exceptions, and no exclusions.
So, Tucker says..."Mark this event on your calendar. Bring your 'fur child' along. I will be at the door to greet you with a dog gone delicious treat."
Posted: 03/29/2007 The Challenge of Sourcing
Tucker and I struggle daily with the sourcing of products. A retail store and e-commerce business can have voracious appetites for recurring and new products.
We are constantly searching for new products, particularly handcrafted products from artisans, that appeal to both local and international consumers.
Pleasing Tucker, since he is the Chief Merchandising Officer, is always challenging. He expects products to be new, innovative and exciting. He wants the very best for his customers and friends.
Based on the constant guidance received from Tucker, we will continue to seek out relationships with artisans who understand people driven by their dogs.
If you have a great product for Tucker to review, please give him a bark!
